How I Redesigned and Improved a Contact Page

Role: Research, Prototype, Interaction, and Visual Design
Company: dataxu

Summary

The contact page is one of the most visited pages on the dataxu site, where customers and visitors come to find phone numbers, get directions, and contact the team. A well functioning form is an imperative tool for collecting leads for sales.

Challenge

The page had layout and alignment issues, important information was well below the fold, and was lacking overall aesthetics due to the use of impersonal generic stock photos.

Solution

I started the redesign by focusing on using the latest branding and utilized real photos of inside sales to make it more personal and less generic. I worked with my colleague to reduce the number of form fields to make it easier to contact us and made the copy more conversational. The text now states we will reach out via email to set expectations.

The old page was dark, had alignment issues, poor typography on mobile and overall lacking in warmth. The old flow for filling out the form brought you to a generic thank you page, loaded with excessive amounts of links trying to promote random content.

The new page focuses on the most important contact information at the top of the page and features photos of real inside sales reps, along with a link to the rest of the numbers and office locations. We reduced the number of form fields and are now displayed in a familiar card style box over a pattern background.

The new page is optimized for all screen sizes and uses simpler messaging, easier navigation, and is spaced out with consistent vertical rhythm.

The new follow up page is also more personal by focusing on who you can expect to be speaking with by using the names of the inside sales team for a personal touch.

Results

In the first 2 weeks after making the changes, we saw significant improvement in engagement and saw increased signs of usability. Not only did the redesign improve aesthetics, but it became a flagship of the branding and the proof is in the numbers:

  • 2.8X more clicks on the phone number after moving it up (Source: CrazyEgg)
  • 16% increase in submission rate (Source: Pardot Analytics)
  • 17.29% decrease in bounce rate for organic traffic (Source: Google Analytics)
